When Karma gets angry

Poem by Refikwe Mokgatlenyane

Time passes by and happiness seeps away
My mind remains a vacant playground, allowing pain to come play
Emotions come and go, day by day
All I realise is I’ve intimidated Karma, and its my time to pay

Love becomes the beautiful word that created me
The nourishing word, that set me free
The shadow of my own life, that let me be
But now love becomes the painful word that destroys me

Friends become like the coffee I drank last night
Become hot an useful the first few times we meet
But as my thoughts wander as usual, they all go cold and detach, bit by bit
They walk away and leave me on my own

Family becomes the only lifeline I’ve got
But still with them I bet my life is short
Because they know nor understand me not
They won’t see me burning inside, breaking inside, because they don’t know am living in a shell
They don’t know life deep down me is real hell
And it’d take a lot, more than a lot, to break open the shell

Love becomes nowhere to be found
Because I’ve let all the milk spill to the ground
Life becomes miserable and memories of the past begin to roll down the line
Days turn into nights and nights into days
All these begin to delineate a clear sign
A sign that I’ve intimidated Karma, and Karma is angry at me
Hence my life remains a trap, waiting on hopelessly to be set free
