Africa’s Very Own
A culture magazine from Southern Africa. Started in 2018 as a Facebook page in Selebi-Phikwe, Botswana; a website from 2020 to 2023 with contributors in Botswana and South Africa; relaunching in 2026 with a point of view.
What we cover
Sound. Amapiano, Afrobeats, jazz, hip-hop and the alternative edges. Long interviews, scene reporting, criticism.
Style. Designers, runway, streetwear, beauty. Photographs first, then the business behind them.
Culture and power. Commentary, identity, creative economies, and pageantry treated as the cultural and economic event it is.
How we work
Every piece needs a point of view or access no one else has. Otherwise it does not run.
Sponsored work is labelled “In partnership with” on every screen. [Draft policy, to confirm: sponsors do not see or edit stories before publication.]
Contributors keep their copyright. AVO takes first publication rights only. [To confirm with the contributor contract.]
History
Maverick Kabelo founded the magazine in Selebi-Phikwe in 2018 as Phikwe’s Very Own, a Facebook-based publication. It became Botswana’s Very Own in 2019 and Africa’s Very Own Magazine in 2020, when the website launched.
